Downtown Local Markets run Wednesdays from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm through to September 25th, offering an amazing mix of local produce, plants, prepared foods, body care, and hand-made arts and crafts. Customers can rest assured that they are supporting the local economy as 80% of each vendor’s wares are made locally. In addition all the farmers at this event grow what they sell so you are truly supporting our local food security system which is just one of the EcoSociety’s mandates.

Family Date Night at Touchstones Nelson @ Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art & History

Bring the whole family to visit Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History for FREE on Thursdays from 4 – 8pm and receive $5 off towards food or drink at the Hume Hotel General Store Restaurant.
Enjoy the two gallery spaces showing. Gallery A is Douglas Bentham: The Tablets – a metal collage sculptural installation and in Gallery B is The Kiltie Band: 100 Year Celebration Exhibit. As well as the second floor permanent exhibit showcasing Nelson and regional history, not to mention the amazing shop featuring over 100 local artisans and authors. Don’t forget the Art Lab an interactive arts area for kids of all ages.

Gu Xiong: The Unknown Remains opening reception @ Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art and History

Multidisciplinary artist, UBC professor and Chinese Immigrant Gu Xiong, is exhibiting his work The Unknown Remains at Touchstones Nelson; Museum of Art and History from August 24 to November 3, with an opening reception and artist talk August 23 at 7 pm. 

 

The show, which covers both galleries, will feature a variety of mediums, including photographs from the Shawn Lamb archives, portraits of the Chinese community in Nelson, historical newspaper articles, drawings from Gu’s collection, and pages of his sketchbooks which were filled when Gu was a teenager in China and living in a labour camp. It also hosts a container ship made of 1500 cardboard boxes, and a wall of 1500 portraits of immigrant workers from Ontario and British Columbia.
